Yes, it’s true we’re in the middle of summer and it seems as though Fall is quickly approaching but we can prolong the mood for a little longer with some quick pick-me-ups. And hey why not take the look right into the new season! The one thing that the NYFW and Paris SS 2018 shows had in common was bold color themes in makeup. The trend actually started back in the spring but it’s not letting up. Makeup artists were given direction to use imaginative and playful ideas with color, although fashion designers emphasized glowing skin and minimal makeup other than the pulsing color on eyes, lips and in some cases cheeks. So take a cue from the runways and brighten your look and your spirit with a pop of color on lips or eyes in some striking colors for lids and lips. If you normally head for the simplicity of browns, greys, and mauves maybe give in to the more exciting hues of yellow, tangerine orange, electric pink or even a pool blue on the eyes.

This goes for lips as well but if you’re wary of the jump, start with an opaque version of the colors and then sheer them out just a bit with a gloss. If you want to keep the look subdued wear the rest of your make up sparingly as your eyes and lips will do most of the talking, in fact, pick which features you want to accentuate the most and really make that area pop but if you want extra wattage in your look go for it!. Don’t be afraid to play up both lips and eyes simultaneously to get the high powered effect you crave.

For the eyeshadow, depending on the look you want to achieve you’ll want to use either a soft fluffy brush or a stiff flat brush. The stiffer the brush the more product will be applied, the fluffy brush will give you the least amount of product and allow for easy blending. Try the #217 Brush from MAC Cosmetics it’s synthetic hairs are just fluffy enough to pick up the right amount of product and distribute it evenly on the lid while doubling as a blender. And the #239 Shader Brush also from MAC Cosmetics is proportioned with short and dense synthetic hairs which will grab product more intensely thus giving you much more opaque coverage.

To get started, give yourself options and try colors in a variety of mediums from powders to crayons to creams, starting with this Violet Voss Flamingo PRO Palette, it literally has every color one could ever need. It’s packed with 20 vibrant tropical shades that will help you create endless looks. Next up is The Zulu Palette from a brand called Juvia’s Place, this one is a more compact collection but no less in the delivery of color. In it, you’ll find a variation of bright red, tangerine orange (as described above) and a sunshine yellow! I’m loving this one myself and the description states that they’re rich and highly pigmented colors. If you only try one let it be this cobalt blue from Nomad Cosmetics with their Nomad X Marrakesh Intense Eyeshadow in Jardin Majorelle. This one will work on a variety of skin tones from medium to tan to rich pecan and even ebony. Want to try a cream instead of a powder shadow? Look no further than Tarte Cosmetics for their Limited Edition Clay Pot Water-proof eyeshadow. The cream-gel formula comes in ten awesome shades that can be used as eyeliner or all over color. And if you want a quick portable glide of color then pack this little guy in your stash for easy application. The IMAN Perfect Eyeshadow Pencil comes in six beautiful shades but I’d try it in a majestic purple like Seduction and the twist up bottom ensures that it never needs sharpening. Or wing out with this new liner from Dior with their Diorshow Onstage Eyeliner in a shocking Matte Red; your cat eye will be anything but run of the mill or be even more daring and try a trick seen at the Jason Wu show and try duo lines in two opposing colors drawn atop the upper lid just below the brow bone.

And let us not leave out the lips, for a perfected pout nothing says “see me” like a fiery fuschia from SugarPill Cosmetics Liquid Lipsticks. I absolutely love this brand and applaud them for fusing shimmer with matte and making it a perfectly cohesive product. I actually have the one in Trinket which is more of a soft baby pink shimmer. This is a great color if you’re looking for that nude lip and smoky-eye-thing but we’re doing vivid, free spirit colors here. And looking more towards that I see something like none other than NARS Lip Gloss in Wonder, a brave shade of orange that you will question how you ever lived without it before.
So go ahead and surrender to your inner rebel and live out your creative side, grab a shade that makes you feel happy or simply something you’d never thought to try because hey, YOLO! Live it in color.
