Have you ever longed to try a red lip color but never have out of fear that it was too strong of a statement or you love the idea of a bold audacious hue but you don’t know which shade suits your skin tone? Well fear not my sweet‒we’ve got you covered. Here at TheStyleStation.com, we turned to the founder of Allure Beauty Lounge in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village district, where esthetician and makeup artist Arlana Andrews runs the brick and mortar skin clinic that serves her clients with excellent skincare as well as makeup applications and lessons.

I myself had always been shy about any shade of red. But over the years I’ve found myself pulled into its magnetic force and when I asked about Andrews’ perspective on red lips she didn’t hold back for one second. “Red lips have always been iconic; it’s bold and fearless. A woman demands attention when she wears red. It’s a powerful and confident color and in spite of the fears of women thinking they can’t wear red lipstick there is a shade and texture of red that is sure to look good on any woman.” She claims.

Andrews got her start in beauty working for one of the makeup world’s most coveted brands, M.A.C. Cosmetics and then went on to receive her esthetician’s license and soon after opened the studio. Not long after her success with the shop she went on to develop a makeup line aptly named after the studio, ABL Cosmetics. It’s a full line that consists of eyeshadows, eye-liners, mascara, foundations, concealers, highlighters, lipstick, lip-glosses, lip pencils, and skincare. With that being said when it comes to her lineup, all of Allure Beauty Cosmetics easy glide lipsticks are rich in vitamin E, antioxidants, and natural vanilla extract. According to Andrews, they come in a variety of super creamy, glossy, super soft matte, pearlized and high gloss shades. You can walk in and be treated to the gentle yet effective benefits of Andrews’ expertise or order product straight from her website Allure Beauty Lounge as she has a full e-commerce site as well. However, it’s best to make an appointment for an in-person visit for the best overall experience.

She also offered some tips for finding the perfect red no matter who you are or what your skin tone is. For instance, a coral and blueish-pink-based red would complement the pink undertone of a fair complexion. Instead of washing out the undertone the look is fresh and bright when mixed with fair skin. Think something like Clarins Rouge Eclat Lipstick in Coral Pink or reach for L’Oreal Paris’ fan favorite, Colour Riche Lip Color in British Red. And for our olive-skinned babes, it’s actually your best friend‒you’ll want to play up your asset with browner and brick colors like the one from her very own collection try, Code Red also M.A.C. in Chili, a velvety matte and Dubonnet a creamy medium shine; both with an excellent color payoff, believe me, I know this brand. I used to work there too. Also, note that wearing a deeper or brighter red leaves little room for error so hide any flaws with a cotton swab or a flat stiff brush (like your concealer brush) and go around the perimeter of the lip area with a tiny amount of concealer to tidy up any smudges.

If you were blessed with yellow skin tones (like moi), you’ll be glad to know that our golden honey hue can wear a range of different types of reds from orange-y to dark deep berry shades. Find yourself ready to experiment with anything from this favorite of mine (I actually own it and it looks super with a tan!)Tom Ford Matte Lipstick in Flame or Trish Mcevoy Lipcolor in French Rose or even rich colors using Nars Velvet Lip Glide in Le Palace a deep cherry red or Unspeakable a deep garnet red will always look healthy and glowing. And as long as we’re on the subject of versatile skin tones bronzed babies get just as much love, you’ll find your perfect shades within an even wider range‒true reds, brick, a hint of orange and even berry shades are calling you so answer with any of the deeper and brighter ones above. How about Stunna Lip Paint from Fenty Beauty? It’s a universal red made for all.

If you have a rich creamy darker skin tone choose a color with a hint of brown, deeper skin tones are also well suited for burgundy reds and deep maroon reds like this one from Nars in Bette. And in the event that you want a little more pop, the orange-red is a go-to staple with a hue for just about everyone with yellow-orange to red-orange undertones. It’s also imperative to keep in mind most skin tones can still wear opposing shades of the color wheel; you will just get a more dramatic effect. Take a hot fuschia-red like this one from Pat McGrath in Major Red from her new line of LuxeTrance Lipsticks to steal the show. Now if this doesn’t convince you that you need to step out of your comfort zone and embrace that side of you that’s bold and daring, the brave you that says, “I am strong and I feel empowered!”, the individual that we all know you are‒well, it’s okay but you don’t get off the hook that easy. Promise you’ll try a red someday, maybe start with a stain or a gloss‒here are two to get you headed in the right direction, seek out Sephora CollectionUltra Shine Lip Gel in Ruby or experiment with Rouge Lip Tint both of these come in a plethora of colors from bright orange to deep plum and dark berry and at prices that won’t break the bank. You’re gonna love making a statement without ever saying one word. Promise.

*As a side note some of these are matte lipsticks but they can always be transformed into a sheer colored gloss with a slip of M.A.C. Clear Lipglass …simply swipe a layer of lipglass and then do a once-over with your favorite red lip color (or any color). Use a lip brush if you don’t want to injure your lipstick bullet.
