Yesterday evening, crowds of style icons and big name celebrities descended on New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Met Gala has always been a major event in terms of fashion, and this year was especially avant garde and dazzling. The theme was Rei Kawakubo (founder of Comme des Garçons). That is, over-the-top outfits with striking silouettes; a little strange, reminding us of the fact that fashion truly is an art form. Stars’ gala attire was certainly reflective of that aesthetic.
It’s hard to pick a stand out. Katy Perry’s veiled red ensemble? Maybe Rihanna’s Comme des Garçons dress? Picture a huge explosion of petals—totally Kawakubo. Bella Hadid showed up in a mesh jumpsuit by Alexander Wang. Kendall Jenner went a step further in a gown with a completely see through back by Le Perla, a lingerie brand. And Cara Delevigne wore all silver, with a plunging neckline; bald (as of last week), her head painted to match her dress. This year’s Met Gala was all about pushing boundaries. It was a quiet year—in the tradition of Rei Kawakubo. But it was a wild one.
There were some more classic looks at the Gala, and they were pretty stunning. Elle Fanning looked like a true ice princess in a gorgeous Miu Miu gown. Anna Wintour wore a sequined Chanel tee shirt gown which we loved.
Still, the overall vibe this year (apparently indicated on the invite) was truly bizarre and beautiful.
